Art Therapy
for Adults

Art therapy is the process of creating, uncovering,
and expressing the many feelings that cannot be put into words. Sometimes there
are no words to describe what one has experienced, and even if there were, one
is often unable to articulate them because of pain, shame, or grief. Art therapy
provides a safe and natural means of expressing strong feeling.
Art therapy uses painting, drawing, sculpting, and other visual art media. These
self-expressive processes allow persons to see and experience more clearly their
inner selves, offer insights beyond the scope of the reasoning mind, provide
different perspectives, and serve as avenues to blocked feelings and issues that
might not readily surface using traditional therapy.
The creative process itself is healing. It has a way of energizing, nurturing,
teaching, and mirroring our true selves. Most of my clients find that the
process of creating art is soothing and facilitates expression of thoughts and
feelings not expressible in words. The creative process goes beyond pain and
anguish and taps into one's inner spirit.
